Have you notcied that the lawn your workplace premises is growing wild? Kielo has not abandoned the maintenance of its properties; instead, it has launched meadowing projects in four locations: Mäkikuumolantie in Hyvinkää, Mattilanniemi in Jyväskylä, Hatanpää in Tampere, and Lappeenranta.

The goal of meadowing is to revitalize the urban environment and provide critical habitats for pollinators. Traditional, closely trimmed lawns offer little nourishment or shelter for insects and other small organisms. Meadows, on the other hand, provide living spaces for various plant and animal species, including bees and butterflies, which are essential for the ecosystem to function.

Meadows are also important heritage biotopes created over time through human activities such as grazing and mowing. Preserving these biotopes is crucial as they serve as habitats for numerous endangered species.

Monitoring, development, and sustainable impact

The meadowing projects are part of Kielo’s broader sustainability strategy supporting ecological resilience. The first year of meadowing projects at Kielo’s premises serves as the foundation for long-term development efforts. The areas are deliberately left untouched—letting the grass grow—so that initial conditions, such as soil health and existing vegetation, can be assessed. During May-August, vegetation is regularly observed and documented, and based on these evaluations, the areas are receiving tailored maintenance methods.
